I asked you if it was possible to show only the threads with new
messages in the Header Pane without all the old threads and posts.
Yes it is View/Header Pane/Show Matching Articles' Threads and also have
the Matching Only Unread Articles filter icon set.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. :-)
As I said, I just use keyboard 'n' for Next Unread Article.
In binary groups I use the filter/search box, eg almost any post with the
year in the subject is likely to be something to delete unread so I type
in 2015, scan through and delete all. Likewise search for .nzb and save
those I'm interested in to a directory on the server. That directory is
monitored by sabnzbd running on the server so the server does the
downloading for me and http://server:8080 in firefox lets me keep an eye
on it. Obviously I can manually download anything interesting without an
nzb file.
You can also specify individual newsgroup prefs so attachments go to a
specific directory. Handy for all those legal videos and photos coming
from different but similar groups so they can go to the same directories,
eg "trains", "planes", "cars", "nekkid wimmin" etc :-)
There's also a tidy little scorefile you use for filtering. IIRC you can
filter from the GUI but it's worth googling around to find out how to
work with it manually since it's quite powerful. A little similar to the
more complex regular expressions filters in Agent and the like. You can
apply filters globally, individually or to a selection of named groups,
set them to auto-expire and other clever stuff. I've not used it much in
recent years since Usenet trolling seems to be a dying art ;-)
